October
Red and White Oak (Quercus rubra and alba) on Balsalm Avenue
Houses tucked close together on a compact avenue,
a streetcar rumbling along a major roadway just down the block, and
trees, lots of trees, some of them up to 120 years old
What
could be more iconic of downtown Toronto's residential areas?
Trees shelter our home environments, functioning like
giant air conditioners to cool our houses and buffer the noises emanating
from busy roads. The urban trees that line our streets add to the "curb
appeal" of residences, increasing real-estate values.
Cities and nature are often thought of as incompatible,
but Toronto's urban forest reveals that it is possible to live in
and with nature.
