Adopt-A-Bale at the High Park Children's Garden

Help build the Children's Teaching Kitchen

The creation of the Children's Teaching Kitchen at the High Park Children's Garden will enhance the principles of the Children's Garden and Exploring Toronto Programs and serve as a landmark demonstration site for sustainable building techniques and renewable energy technologies.

In keeping with the principles of the Children's Garden, Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation plans to create this building with the environment and the community in mind - a straw bale building to replace the old picnic shelter at the Garden with minimal impact on our environment.

Through workshops and seminars, residents will be able to help build the kitchen and learn about environmentally sustainable building practices.

The Children's Teaching Kitchen will also provide accessible programming space for our youth cooking program and allow for additional local foods and nutrition programs for the community.

Why Straw Bales?

As a building material, straw bales have a long and respected history as an inexpensive, local and environmentally friendly building resource. They're an outstanding insulator keeping buildings warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer with less supplemental heating and cooling.

Once plastered, straw bale walls are remarkably strong, have a high fire safety rating and provide exceptional sound insulation.

Why Adopt a Bale?

Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation wants to provide the residents of Toronto with a unique opportunity to participate in this historic occasion - a sustainably-built municipal facility with renewable energy technologies created as a demonstration site for all who intend to learn how to lessen their impact on our environment.
