EASTERN WHITE CEDAR IN WOODLANDS PARK
Deep in the forest of Woodlands Park, the bustle
of the city feels very far away. The shady old-growth oasis, with its
moist woodsy aromas, cooling green colours and the sounds of bird calls—all
invite you to immerse yourself in the world of the forest.
Woodlands Park is one of the natural areas that comprise the Rouge Park,
North America’s largest urban park. More than 760 plant species
grow in the Rouge Valley’s forests, wetlands, savannas and shoreline,
many of them nationally, provincially or regionally rare. The Rouge
Park represents the best remaining forest habitat in Toronto—many
of the park’s trees are more than 130 years old—and the
only intact natural corridor linking the Oak Ridges Moraine to Lake
Ontario. Full of hiking trails, this is Toronto’s wild urban gem.
