Winterscape at Prospect Cemetery

Looking at these wintry giants, it's their beauty that strikes us first-how serene and peaceful we feel in their presence. This is the season of rest in the urban forest-with deciduous trees in dormancy and coniferous trees in a slowed-down state of growth.

But cast your mind ahead just a few months to the time when the forest is alive with activity, and consider all the benefits that trees provide in the urban environment. Their natural beauty inspires us, their cooling shade comforts us. And as they do the important work of moderating the climate, filtering air pollution, capturing and cycling rainwater, anchoring the soil, and providing food and shelter for wildlife, the trees of the city form the crucial green infrastructure necessary to our health and quality of life.

During this winter moment of rest, let's pause, too, and celebrate the trees of our city and all the good work that they do.
